MeBeBot had an opportunity to sit down with John Adcock, the Chief People Officer at Eventbrite, to discuss the impact of digital technology on the organizations he has led throughout his innovative career. We think his ideas and approach will help other HR leaders, especially during uncertain times, make the best decisions to utilize resources in the most efficient way. Here are the highlights of our conversation.

If we told you that MeBeBot helps HR, IT, Payroll, Benefits, and Facilities teams to do their best work by freeing up humans to handle the hard work, you might begin scratching your head and ask, “How can this be?”

However, this is the view of John Adcock, the Chief People Officer at Eventbrite. John has been using digital technologies for improving efficiencies and productivity for over five years in fast-growing organizations and he speaks from results-based experiences.

John believes that companies need scalable digital technology solutions. So as the organization grows, digital technology solutions continue to do more significant chunks of the routine/manual work and ease the workload, to scale efficiently.

Digital Technology Solutions Liberate Team Members

Digital technology solutions, such as MeBeBot’s AI-driven chatbot, reduce HR, IT, Facilities, and Payroll and Benefit team members’ unproductive time by answering the commonly asked questions of employees (as an App in Teams and/or Slack or as web chat).

This liberates team members to do the strategic or “hard” work, as John likes to call it. The hard work is the critical work of HR (and other internal teams), which can include workforce planning, developing compensation and benefit plans, implementing a security solution, and restructuring the business to support hybrid work.

MeBeBot helps teams do their best work because it eliminates time delays for team members waiting for answers to their questions. These commonly asked questions may be about benefit issues, how to file expense reports, requesting a new office badge, or resolving an issue with accessing a file on shared drives. When team members can access this information 24/7 in the office or remotely, it helps save valuable time and improves overall productivity, explains John.

John elaborates, “MeBeBot relieves HR staff from answering the same employee questions all day long to be thinking about the next questions employees will be asking. This is especially important as we further develop talent strategies, the office of the future, and how to build trust with employees and better reward them.”

John, who was also the Senior Vice President of People Ops for Care.com and separately for RetailMeNot, uses the following example to show further how digital technology helps HR organizations improve processes and scale. Textio is a digital technology that helps remove hidden biases from job postings to increase the number of diverse job applicants. It also can be used in talent systems to disrupt hidden biases and provide microlearning to the user in real-time, such as managers writing a performance review. And because it is digital, it is scalable and economically growing as the company grows. As the organization hires more managers, Textio is there to train the new managers in real time.

Digital Technology Enables You to Do More with Less

John also encourages leaders to be patient with new digital technology. He notes that in March 2020, when employees were sent home in an afternoon to prevent the spreading of the Covid-19 virus, everyone jumped on web conferencing solutions (like Zoom and Teams). They didn’t know everything about using these platforms, but they learned quickly through hands-on experiences.

He reminds us of the development of the famous Ford car factories in the early 20th century by Henry Ford. He didn’t start to perfect his famous Ford factories until 20 years after the combustible engine cars took to the road. Then it took Henry Ford five years to learn and improve the efficiency of his factories and the quality of Ford cars. Overall, it took Ford 25 years to get automobile manufacturing to hum.

It is also important to note that during economic uncertainty, using digital transformation solutions that enable organizations to do more with less will be vital. While budgets may be tighter and you may not be able to invest in upgrading or changing large-scale solutions (like an HCM), finding cost-effective tools with rapid ROI, like MeBeBot’s Intelligent Assistant, will help improve efficiencies and increase productivity, while maximizing the use of existing technologies.

Companies of all sizes and types of industries can use digital technology to help teams do their best work by automating routine tasks and letting humans handle the hard work. Their team members will enjoy being relieved of the repetition of unfulfilling tasks and having the time to positively impact their employees’ working lives and improve their company’s profitable growth.
